MY STORY

Get to know Charlie

From my early teens, I have been fascinated with the art of acting. At first, those early years were attached to my need for attention, and an idea of success rooted in public acknowledgment and praise. But as I matured, and began to look at acting as a serious and important art form, I came to appreciate the extraordinary skill set needed to consistently create organic, vivid, fully realized human behavior. It led me through my undergraduate years at Purdue University, and ultimately to graduate school at Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts, where I had the privilege of studying under master teachers Maggie Flanigan and William Esper. As a young aspiring artist, Maggie instilled in me an inviolate sense of truth, and a deep understanding of craft and artistry. The Meisner Technique which they taught, gave me a way of working, a process that has supported me my entire adult life.

My journey into teaching was unexpected, and my love and passion for training aspiring actors revealed itself to be the creative passion of my life. In 2005, I joined Maggie at her recently opened studio in NYC, mentoring again under her as a teacher of the Meisner Technique. In 2012 I bought the studio, and have continued to take her vision of a serious professional training program forward to a new generation of aspiring artists.

“I believe that teaching is an art form, and for almost two decades, I have dedicated myself to mastering the Meisner Technique, and instilling my strong beliefs about artistry into my student’s creative journey.”

Creating Behavior was born during the pandemic. As my students and the rest of humanity faced frightful, and precarious times, I challenged them to find the grit and resilience to adapt, and use this period to rebirth themselves, to pursue creative projects that had been waiting for some sustained attention. But I realized that I was not applying the same advice to myself.  My hypocrisy was glaring, so I turned my attention towards a project I had dismissed for years. I dived into everything I could find about starting a podcast.  This show has become one of the most enjoyable projects of my life, and my wish is to provide you with a way of approaching your creative process, rooted in intellectual curiosity and empathy for the human condition.
